The University of Florida
Student Chapter of the Associate Builders and Contractors
was established in November of 1983. The student chapter
is sponsored by the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of
the national organization.
The purpose of the student
chapter is to increase student knowledge of the construction
industry, promote fellowship and professionalism,
and provide service to the School of Building Construction,
the University of Florida, and the community. ABC
has been recognized as the best student chapter in
the nation in both 1990 and 1992.
Associated Builders and Contractor's
chief purpose is the creation of a work climate where
independent and union firms can work together in harmony.
An important goal of the chapter is to promote the
'Merit Shop' philosophy and the right to choose between
independent and union work environments.
Important functions of the
student chapter include sponsoring guest speakers
at each meeting, sending representatives to both state
and national ABC conventions, and to sponsor the annual
'ABC Student-Contractor Social.' The socials are an
excellent opportunity for students and contractors
to meet in an informal atmosphere. This allows contractors
to conduct informal interviews for potential summer
and permanent employment, as well as giving professional
guidance to students.
Other chapter activities
include attending monthly Gulf Coast Chapter meetings,
fund raisers, assisting in Homecoming activities,
and organizing social gatherings. Dr.
Robert Cox is the faculty advisor.
